Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the practical aspects of Audiovisual Translation as well as its place in the broader cultural framework. While AVT reaches a larger audience than any other type of translation, it comes with a number of limitations. Having become the most popular mode of AVT, subtitling is discussed in more detail with a focus on its constraints and translation strategies. Cultural references, however, have proved to be the most challenging to render in translation, as well as taboo and offensive language, which have also shown to pose problems for translators. In the Croatian subtitling of Pulp Fiction offensive language was often censored or omitted. This resulted in a translation that appeared much „weaker‟ than the original with much of the film‟s character being lost in the process.

Cilj ovog rada jest analiza praktičnih aspekata audiovisualnog prevođenja te njegovog položaja u širem kuluralnom kontekstu. Iako audiovizualno prevođenje dolazi u kontakt s većim brojem ljudi nego druge vrste prevođenja, ono dolazi i s brojnim ograničenjima. Kao najpopularniji način audioviuzalnog prevođenja, o podslovljavanju se govori u više detalja, sa posebnim naglaskom na njegova ograničenja i metode prevođenja. Ipak, kulturne reference su se pokazale kao najzahtjevnije za prevođenje, isto kao vulgarizmi i tabu u jeziku. U hrvatskim titlovima Paklenog šunda vulgarizmi su često cenzurirani ili izostavljani. To je rezultiralo prijevodom koji se doima puno „slabijim‟ od originala te su u procesu izgubljene neke od karakteristika filma.
