Abstract
The aim of this diploma thesis is to analyse the notion of critical utopia in two novels of Ursula K. Le Guin, The Dispossessed (1974) and The Left Hand of Darkness (1969) by applying Tom Moylan’s views on critical utopia described in Demand the Impossible: Science Fiction and the Utopian Imagination (2014) as our theoretical background. The focus lies on exploring gender, sexuality and aspects of ambiguous utopian societies. We discover different ways in which Le Guin depicts a genderless and androgynous society on planet Gethen as well as how a utopian community of Anarres functions, paradoxically, with the help of centralization and social order. Androgyny is also connected to utopian imagination with the emphasis on the question of its role in society.

Cilj ovog diplomskog rada je analizirati pojam kritičke utopije u dvama romanima Ursule K. Le Guin, The Dispossessed (1974) i The Left Hand of Darkness (1969) uz pomoć Tom Moylanovog razumijevanja kritičke utopije opisane u Demand the Impossible: Science Fiction and the Utopian Imagination (2014) kao teoretske podloge. Fokus leži u istraživanju spola, seksualnosti i elemenata dvosmislenog društva na planetu Gethen, kao i načina na koji zajednica na Anarresu djeluje, paradoksalno, uz pomoć centralizacije i društvenog poretka. Androginiju povezujemo s utopijskom maštom s ključnim pitanjem njezine uloge u društvu.
