Abstract
One of the most prominent language acquisition theories is Noam Chomsky's Innatist theroy. It claims that humans are endowed with innate grammar which, due to inborn mental rules, enables us to acquire languages. Besides the Innatist theory, there are other language acquisition theories which claim that language is learned from experience or through interaction with the environment. However, they fail to explain the poverty-of-the-stimulus argument which states that the data available to children are too insufficient to account for language acquisition. Also, innatists claim that our innate grammar contains principles that are universal to all languages and parameters which depend on the language of input. The research has been conducted for the purposes of this thesis to examine whether second language speakers of English know the structure dependency principle even though it is not manifested in examined grammatical structures in their first language. In accordance with established hypotheses, the paper presents and analyzes the results of the research conducted among subjects whose first languages are Czech, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic.
Abstract (croatian)
Jedna od istaknutijih teorija usvajanja jezika je ona Noama Chomskog, a to je teorija urođenosti. Glavna tvrdnja te teorije je da su ljudi obdareni urođenom gramatikom koja nam, zahvaljujući prirođenim mentalnim pravilima, omogućava usvajanje jezika. Osim one o urođenosti, postoje i druge teorije o usvajanju jezika koje tvrde da se jezik uči iz iskustva ili kroz interakciju s okolinom. Međutim, one ne uspijevaju objasniti argument o nedostatku podražaja koji tvrdi da su jezični podaci koji su dostupni djeci nedovoljni da bi se na njima temeljilo usvajanje jezika. Također, pristaše teorije urođenosti tvrde da se gramatika koju posjedujemo sastoji od principa koji su univerzalni u svim jezicima i parametara koji ovise o jeziku kojem smo bili izloženi. U svrhu ovog rada provedeno je istraživanje kojim se nastoji ispitati znaju li govornici engleskog kao drugog jezika princip o strukturalnoj ovisnosti iako nije manifestiran u upitnikom testiranim gramatičkim strukturama u njihovom prvom jeziku. Rezultate ispitanika čiji su prvi jezici češki, njemački, talijanski, kineski, japanski i arapski ćemo predstaviti i analizirati u skladu s postavljenim hipotezama.
