Abstract
Proper nouns are an integral and important part of one´s identity as they identify a person as a unique individual. However, the uniqueness of proper nouns does not lay in their meaning only, but also in the grammatical features they display in comparison to other types of nouns. One of the most peculiar one being their idiosyncratic pronunciation. This thesis examines the problems occurring when being confronted with the pronunciation of proper names of various foreign origins and why their pronunciation is as difficult to predict as it is. Furthermore, two processes - transliteration and Anglicization - are being explained on concrete examples of foreign proper names, ranging from those written in non-Roman scripts to those of European origin, as two methods facilitating the pronunciation of foreign proper names to an average speaker of the English language.
Abstract (croatian)
Vlasitite imenice su sastavni i važni dio identiteta, jer identificiraju osobu kao jedinstvenog pojedinca. Međutim, posebnost vlastitih imena ne leži samo u njihovom značenju, nego i u njihovim gramatičkim značajkama u uspredbi s drugim vrstama imenica. Najjedinstveniji je njihov idiosinkrazijski izgovor. Ova teza ispituje probleme koji se javljaju kada smo suočeni s izgovorom vlasitih imena različitih podrijetla i zašto je njihov izgovor tako težak za predvidjeti kakav je. Nadalje, dva procesa – proces transliteracija i anglicizacija – se objašnjavaju na konkretnim primjerima stranih vlastitih imena, od onih napisanih ne-latiničnim pismima do onih europskog prodrijetla, kao dvije metode koje olakšavaju izgovor stranih vlastitih imena prosječnom govorniku engleskog jezika.
