Abstract
The novels Breakfast in Babylon and More Bread or I’ll Appear written by an Irish author Emer Martin deal with young women who experience neglect and sense of displacement in their native Ireland. By becoming female emigrants who wander in an infinite pursuit for something intangible, they tear up traditional structures of religion, family and state to create a new pattern of liquid modernity among Irish emigrants in a globalized world. While associating with people from the edge of society, they ridicule Irish traditional values and change the representation of Irish traditional diaspora. This paper gives a general picture of issues that Martin’s compulsive travellers encounter in the world. Their role is to break the ice and start the wave of new, contemporary female emigrants who concentrate on adventurous freedom instead uptight tradition.

Romani Breakfast in Babylon i More Bread or I'll Appear irske autorice Emer Martin bave se tematikom mladih zanemarenih žena koje ne osjećaju pripadnost u vlastitoj zemlji. Postavši emigrantice koje lutaju u beskonačnoj potrazi za nečim nedohvatljivim, one cijepaju tradicionalne strukture religije, obitelji i države te time stvaraju novi uzorak tekuće modernosti među irskim emigrantima u globaliziranom svijetu. Povezujući se s ljudima s ruba društva ismijavaju irske tradicionalne vrijednosti te mijenjaju ono što je predstavljalo tradicionalnu irsku dijasporu. Ovaj rad predstavlja opći prikaz problema s kojima se Martinine kompulzivne putnice susreću u svijetu. Njihova je uloga probiti led i pokrenuti val novih, suvremenih emigrantica koje pribjegavaju avanturističkoj slobodi umjesto ukočene tradicije.
