Abstract
This BA thesis examines the notion of fictional books, or pseudobiblia, and how they are connected with the theme of forbidden knowledge. Accent is placed on H.P. Lovecraft as the creator of one of the most famous examples of fictional books – the Necronomicon. Through the analysis of several of his stories, the thesis shows how the author’s idea of the nature of the Necronomicon, and indeed his whole mythology, changes as his literary career progresses. It also examines the Necronomicon as a repository of forbidden knowledge and looks into the effects this knowledge has on human sanity. Finally, the thesis analyses the role the Necronomicon plays in the narrative of Lovecraft’s stories and shows how this role becomes more prominent in his later work.
Abstract (croatian)
Ovaj završni rad istražuje pojam fiktivnih knjiga, ili pseudobiblia, i njihovu vezu s temom zabranjenog znanja. Naglasak je stavljen na H.P. Lovecrafta kao tvorca jednog od najboljih primjera fiktivne knjige – Necronomicona. Analizom nekoliko njegovih priča ovaj rad prikazuje kako su se piščeve ideje o naravi Necronomicona, ali i o naravi njegove sveukupne mitologije, mijenjale kroz njegovu književnu karijeru. Također istražuje Necronomicon kao izvor zabranjenog znanja te utjecaj tog znanja na ljudski razum. Naposljetku, rad analizira ulogu Necronomicona u narativi Lovecraftovih priča te prikazuje kako je ta uloga postajala sve istaknutija u njegovim kasnijim djelima.
